After Tubby named turkey, Duke gobbles down Gophers 89-71

The U of M men's basketball team was banished from Atlantis by a bunch of Blue Devils. The Gophers absorbed their first loss of the young season at the hands of fifth-ranked Duke, 89-71. They'll continue in the Battle 4 Atlantis holiday tournament in the Bahamas on Friday.

The box score shows Duke's Seth Curry lit up the Gophers for 25 points, while Rodney Williams, Jr., led the way for Minnesota with 16 and seven rebounds.

For Coach Tubby Smith the result does nothing to ease the sting found in Thursday morning's paper. Tubby nudged out one of his U of M coaching peers and one of his own players to be christened Turkey of the Year by the Star Tribune's Patrick Reusse.

The venerable columnist's Thanksgiving tradition is thirty-five years old now. Who knew a late '70's column roasting the late Woody Hayes would lead to such a long and ignominious parade of poultry?

New contract keeps Tubby with Gophers five more years

After more than a year of negotiations, the University of Minnesota and men's basketball coach Tubby Smith have agreed to a three-year contract extension. That comes on top of two years remaining on his current contract, keeping Smith and the Gophers tied together through the spring of 2017. Smith has yet to deliver an NCAA tournament victory in his five years in Minnesota, but the Gophers finished last season with a run to the NIT finals.

Tubby says he's staying with Gophers

Tubby Smith told the Star Tribune on Monday that he has no intentions of leaving the University of Minnesota. The Gophers' basketball coach says he "is not a candidate for any place", but he does take rumors of teams being interested in him as a compliment.
