Reports: Gibson wins battle for 5th starter; Worley clears waivers

The apparent four-man competition for the final spot in the Minnesota Twins starting rotation has ended.

According to the Star Tribune, the team could announce as soon as today that Kyle Gibson is joining Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey in the starting rotation. Nolasco is scheduled to start the season opener in Chicago against the White Sox on March 31.

Gibson won the job over Samuel Deduno, Vance Worley and Scott Diamond.

Diamond's spring ERA of 5.79 wasn't good enough to compete with Gibson's 2.70 ERA. Deduno could have won the job, but the Twins feel he is better suited to come out of the bullpen.

Worley, who was roughed up in his last spring outing against the Rays on Tuesday night, has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple A Rochester. He was placed on waivers Wednesday.

On the spring Worley posted a 13.50 ERA in four Grapefruit League appearances. On Tuesday, he gave up seven runs on 11 hits, including six doubles.
