The Minnesota Vikings have named a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles... and it's only Wednesday.

It seems like the Vikings have waited until the end of most weeks to name a starter, but today head coach Leslie Frazier announced that Matt Cassel will start this week against the Eagles.

Cassel earned the start after helping the Vikings nearly win a wild game in Baltimore last Sunday.

“I feel like Matt did some good things in that ballgame on Sunday,” Frazier said, via “He’ll have an opportunity on Sunday to go out and play well and build on this as opposed to looking back at the past. He’s more than capable.”

Cassel gets the nod this week but that doesn't mean the Vikings have thrown hope for Christian Ponder, who will be the backup, out the window.

“We’d love to have stability at the position,” Frazier added. “It’s hard to really build your team if you don’t have stability at that position. This is a chance to take a look at Matt at length and go from there.”

Cassel told the media during a press conference that he's excited to get a second straight start. He also shaved his sweet mustache. We'll miss it...

At the bottom of the depth chart sits Josh Freeman, who hasn't played in nearly two months. Pro Football Talk says the Vikings could save $166,667 a week if they simply cut Freeman now.
