Apple Valley, Simley and Minneota were crowned state champions on Thursday in the team portion of the Minnesota State High School League wrestling championships. The individual tournament starts Friday.

Apple Valley won for an unprecedented 10th consecutive year, but it wasn't easy. St. Michael-Albertville went into the final match tied with the perennial champs at 30-all. That's when, according to MN Wrestling Hub, Apple Valley used 220-pound freshman Gable Steveson in the deciding 285-pound heavyweight bout.

The result: Steveson pinned his opponent for the outright team championship.

In 2013 St. Michael-Albertville earned a 28-28 tie in the title match to claim a co-championship with Apple Valley.

Simley wins 2A title

The Simley Spartans, the top seed in Class 2A, defeated Albert Lea 34-21 for the championship.

"When you wrestle for your teammate, every point, every major decision, everything you do, is huge,'' Simley coach Will Short said, according to the Pioneer Press. "You could see up and down the lineup that these guys were wrestling for each other in every situation. That is really nice to see. Very satisfying.''

Minneota wins 1A title

The Minneota Vikings won the Class 1A title for the first time in school history. The championship trophy will look nice sitting next to the football title the school won in November.

MN Wrestling Hub notes that 12 of the 14 starting wrestlers played on the football team – and they were fighting for a second title this season in their 31-30 nail-biting title match against Zumbrota-Mazeppa.
