Apple Valley's Tre Jones, Gary Trent Jr. named to U-16 national team

Two standout basketball players from Apple Valley High School have played their way onto the USA Under-16 national team.

Sophomore Gary Trent Jr., son of former Timberwolves forward Gary Trent, and ninth-grader Tre Jones, brother of NBA-bound Duke guard Tyus Jones, made the team of 12 after competing with 17 players at the U.S. training facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Both players led Apple Valley to the Class 4A state championship this year, and both will represent the Red, White and Blue at the FIBA Americas U-16 Championship in Argentina later this month.

“I don’t want to put that pressure on myself,” said Jones, who was asked Monday by USA Today about comparisons to his older brother. “I’ve just got to only worry about myself and not worry about what anybody says or how they compare me and him. I’ve just got to worry about myself and keep working hard.”

Don Showalter, the head coach of the U-16 national team, said Tre is a better defender than Tyus was at the same age.

Tyus won gold medals playing for the U-16, U-17 and U-18 national teams; he kept winning as a freshman at Duke, leading the Blue Devils to the national championship. He's expected to be a mid-to-late first-round draft pick later this month.

Just last week Trent tweeted that he received a scholarship offer from the University of Kansas. 247 Sports ranked him the No. 1 shooting guard in the Class of 2017 and a top five player nationally. The site called him a "cornerstone" player for the national team.
