The protest movement of athletes taking a knee during the national anthem is spreading to Minnesota.

It started during the NFL preseason when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to sit, then take a knee during the national anthem. It spread to some other teams where players either joined Kaepernick or showed their support in other ways.

Last week, that movement arrived in Minnesota when a pair of Minneapolis high school teams had players take a knee during the national anthem.

The Minneapolis South volleyball team's players all took a knee during the national anthem ahead of their match on Thursday night, and some Minneapolis North football players did the same thing on Friday.

Kaepernick says he began the protests to draw attention to he injustice that exists in the country. He has been praised and drawn criticism for the protest.

"We respect our students' right to freedom of speech as long as their actions do not threaten safety and security of others," said Minneapolis Public Schools spokesman Dirk Tedmon in a statement to USA Today.

Racial relations between police and minority groups in the Twin Cities have been tenuous since Jamar Clark and Philando Castile were shot by police in separate incidents over the last year.
