Benilde-St. Margaret's Grant Besse is Minnesota's Mr. Hockey

His name hasn't changed, but Grant Besse can now work on signing autographs with the phrase Mr. Hockey.

The senior at Benilde-St. Margaret's was named Minnesota's player of the year in boys high school hockey Sunday.

In an age when junior hockey programs typically lure the best teenage players away from high school teams, Besse defied convention by staying with Benilde St. Margaret's through his senior year. He tells the Pioneer Press "To play with the guys and to represent my school was really important to me."

His coach calls Besse a throwback who is what high school hockey should be all about.

The Star Tribune notes his career totals put him fifth in state history in goals and seventh in scoring, just behind players named Spehar and Mayasich.

Mr. Hockey now heads to college.

Alas, it won't be at any of Minnesota's five Division I programs. A cheesier state to the east has dibs on Besse. And Badger puckheads were watching with interest as one of their recruits was crowned the king of Minnesota hockey.
