More space, hours expected at rebuilt Horse and Hunt Club

An expanded version of the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club will rise from the ashes in Prior Lake.

The Star Tribune reports that plans for "a bigger and better clubhouse" are nearing completion and construction of the new facility should begin in April. When the clubhouse reopens some time in mid-August, the restaurant will also expand the hours that it is open to the public.

A New Year's Eve fire caused $2 million in damage to the 10,000-square-foot, two-story building that housed the club's headquarters and Trigger's bar and restaurant. Workers have hauled away much of the charred debris from the blaze. The cause remains unclear, but investigators believe it's likely that it was an electrical fire.

The Prior Lake American reported that the 600-acre, 1,000 member club hosts major shotgun sporting and hunting events throughout the year. The facility includes the clubhouse with bar and restaurant, several outbuildings, animal kennels and cabin-like accommodations for guests.

Since the fire, club offices relocated to one of the club’s lodges. Most of its outdoor shooting and bird hunting tournaments have been able to proceed as scheduled despite the fire, although the bitter cold winter did chill the numbers of shooting enthusiasts who wanted to participate in events, according to general manager Terry Correll.

Three large events, including the U.S. Open Pheasant Hunting Championships, are coming up in the next month. Correll said he hopes to call back 10 laid-off kitchen and restaurant workers for the U.S. Open, which runs April 3-7. Spring shooting leagues begin in mid-April.
