Bill would allow alcohol sales at Gopher hockey and basketball games

A St. Paul Park lawmaker introduced a bill Thursday that would allow beer and wine to be sold at Gopher hockey and basketball games.

Last year, the Legislature approved the sale of alcohol at TCF Bank Stadium. More than $900,000 was generated from alcohol sales last season, nearly double the projected total.

Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, says the football game alcohol sales proved “Armageddon did not happen” and booze could be monitored, the Associated Press reports.

Wine and beer is already sold to those who sit in suites at the arenas, but Schoen tells MPR that all adults should be able to purchase alcohol, not just those in the expensive seats.

The legislation would only approve sales at Williams and Mariucci Arenas, but does not include Ridder Arena where the women's hockey team plays.

Representatives passed a bill Friday that allows beer to be sold at the University of Minnesota's on-campus TCF Bank Stadium. Alcohol sales would be limited to luxury suites and a designated beer garden. A similar measure passed the Senate earlier this week. The plan still needs approval from Gov. Mark Dayton and the university’s Board of Regents.
