The victory is not a big surprise – Tufte was said to be a headliner of the ten Mr. Hockey finalists when they were named last month.

He's also an undeniable top prep prospect in Minnesota – with NHL Central Scouting having recently raised its rating on Tufte from a B prospect to an A prospect, NHL.com says he's a first-round caliber talent, and there's a good chance he'll be picked in the 2016 NHL Draft this June.

He overcame not only the usual challenges one finds trying to become a hockey standout, but also a medical one. According to a video report from KEYC reporter Barrett Anderson, Tufte was diagnosed with diabetes just before an important game when he was 11 years old.

Since then, he has had to manage his condition to stay on the ice, though Tufte's mother told Anderson the daily skating helps keep his blood-sugar levels normal.

It was the 32nd annual Mr. Hockey awards ceremony and was held Sunday at the RiverCentre in St. Paul – that’s the day after the state championship games at Xcel Energy Center.

According to Vintage Minnesota Hockey, the Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award is given to the state's "outstanding senior high school boys' hockey player" following the State High School hockey tournament, during which Wayzata secured their championship title over Eden Prairie.

"Mr. Hockey" is elected by a panel of NHL scouts, junior scouts and coaches, and "select media members from around the state," Vintage Minnesota Hockey says.

The title has been awarded annually since 1985.
