The University of Minnesota Duluth controlled the game and shutout the Gophers 3-0 at Mariucci Arena on Friday night to open a home-and-home series with a big road win.

For the Gophers the shutout dealt them a stunning loss.

The Bulldogs controlled the game, outshooting Minnesota 38-17.

"They were the better team tonight from the get go," said Gophers coach Don Lucia afterwards. "We couldn't get anything going, they got all the loose pucks, it wasn't our night tonight and they played very well and deserved to win the game."

UMD picked up goals in each period, while shutting down the high-powered Minnesota attack.

Austin Farley put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at the 2:07 mark of the first period. He was assisted by Andy Welinski and Cal Decowski.

Farley finished with a goal and an assists to lead the Bulldogs.

In the second period, the Bulldogs extended the lead to 2-0 when Dan Molenaar beat Gopher goaltender Adam Wilcox. Karson Kuhlman and Tony Cameranesi each added helpers.

Then in the third, the Bulldogs put it away on a goal by Dominic Toninato with assists from Farley and Decowski.

Wilcox had 35 saves in the loss for Minnesota, while Bulldog goaltender Kasimir Kaskisuo stopped all 17 shots he faced.

It was just the second loss of the season for Minnesota, who has to try and regroup quickly. The series continues on Saturday night in Duluth.
