Bulls, Pelicans potential front runners for Royce White comeback

Two NBA teams are emerging as potential front runners in the possible comeback of Minnesota native and former Iowa State forward Royce White.

RealGM reports the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans are emerging as suitors for the 16th overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft. The Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs are also in the mix to sign the 24-year-old.

Chicago is particularly interesting right now. Iowa State coach and former Timberwolves player Fred Hoiberg is rumored to be in line to replace Tom Thibodeau as the Bulls head coach. Thibodeau was fired Thursday and White played for Hoiberg at Iowa State.

White was originally drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2012, but never suited up for the team. On the court, White has special skills. Pro Basketball Talk describes him as a forward with a point guard's vision. But White fell out of the lottery because teams were leery of him because of his well-documented battle with anxiety disorder.

In Houston, he disagreed with team officials and doctors about the best way to manage his condition. After he refused to be assigned to the D-League, the Rockets traded him to Philadelphia where he was released.

White's comeback path will likely lead through the July summer league. This time he's confident it will work.

"I don't even believe in that, in case it doesn't work out," White told KSTP last week. "It's gonna work out, it's gonna work out."

White has reportedly been training for his comeback in Minneapolis with former Timberwolves guard Chris Carr.
