Minnesota native Sam Carlson was drafted No. 55 overall (second round) by the Seattle Mariners at the MLB Draft on Monday.

According to MLB.com, Carlson was the 15th-best prospect in the draft, so Seattle may have gotten themselves a steal. The Twins had chances to take him with the 35th and 37th picks but took a bat from the SEC and a pitcher from Canada instead.

Carlson is a standout right-hander at Burnsville High School. He has a fastball that touches the mid-90's and he has two breaking balls that have tremendous movement.

"You can't tell between his fastball and his changeup, because his changeup has so much movement on it," said Burnsville baseball coach Mick Scholls.

He's committed to the University of Florida, which is one of the biggest powerhouses in all of college baseball.

The right-handed pitcher is the state's highest MLB Draft pick since Sam Hentges of Mounds View went in the fourth round of the 2012 draft.

Carlson is slated to play in the state tournament this week, too.
