Chicago Bears waive former Gophers safety Brock Vereen

Just about 18 months after trading up in the 2014 NFL Draft to select former Gophers safety Brock Vereen, the Chicago Bears waived him on Tuesday.

Pro Football Talk reports Vereen, a fourth round pick, is the first member from the Bears 2014 draft class to be dropped from the roster. It is part of the latest roster purge by the Bears, which included trading former Vikings defensive end Jared Allen to Carolina.

Vereen started four games as a rookie in 2014, but only played sparingly this season. The Chicago Sun Times notes that he was in Sunday's game enough to get beaten for a touchdown by Seattle tight end Jimmy Graham.

In 19 games with Chicago, Vereen finished with 39 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Vereen started training camp with the first-string defense. New Bears coach John Fox said he liked Vereen's cover skills coming out of Minnesota. But he wasn't able to hold the spot and was demoted following the first exhibition game.

Vereen was a four-year starter with the Gophers from 2010 to 2013. He was first team All-Big Ten by the coaches after his Senior season with the Gophers.
