Chisholm musher repeats as winner of John Beargrease marathon

Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm is a repeat winner of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon, after leading his team across the finish line in Duluth Wednesday.

KDAL reports Schroeder had been running neck-and-neck with Keith Aili's dogs over much of the course, which extends nearly 400 miles from Duluth up the Lake Superior shore and back. But Schroeder pulled away on Wednesday and KDAL says by the time he finished, his team was about two hours ahead of Aili's.

Lists of finishers in the marathon and the mid-distance race are available at the John Beargrease site.

Schroeder and his dogs were greeted by well-wishers after crossing the finish line near Billy's Bar.

This is Schroeder's second straight Beargrease victory and third overall. Before this year's race he told WDIO that staying positive , even in bitterly cold weather, would be a key to success. "I try to stay positive with the weather and the outcome is a positive dog team and positive dogs run real nice," Schroeder said.

This year the dogs very nearly didn't run at all. Organizers said last fall that financial problems would force cancellation of the 30th John Beargrease marathon. But that quickly prompted a new board of directors to step in and salvage the 2014 race.

KDAL reports Schroeder also plans to take part in this year's running of the Alaskan Iditarod, North America's premier sled dog race.
