CHS Field in the running to be country's best independent ballpark

The new home of the St. Paul Saints is one of the best independent ballparks in the country – but is it the best?

A new knockout-style poll by Ballpark Digest online is aiming to find that out. CHS Field is facing off against TD Bank Ballpark in New Jersey in the final round of the competition.

The $63 million Lowertown ballpark just opened for the Saints this season. It was built with nearly $55 million in public money, including an appropriation from the 2014 bonding bill.

The capacity of the ballpark is listed at 7,000 and it has a variety of seating choices ranging from luxury boxes to bar stools, to a spot on a grass berm.

The Star Tribune's Frank Edgerton Martin offered rave reviews of CHS Field last week.

"With the just opened CHS Field for the Saints in Lowertown and the Twins' Target Field in its fifth season, Minnesota can now boast two of the finest stadiums in baseball. Each is outdoors, offers superb sight lines and provides views of its respective downtown. And yet, the two ballparks could not be more different in their gameday experiences."

WCCO notes that 32 stadiums were initially included in the Ballpark Digest poll. To reach the finals, fans chose CHS Field by a good sized margin over Sioux Falls Stadium (Sioux Falls Canaries).

TD Bank Ballpark, which opened in June of 1999, emerged in the fan vote over Yogi Berra Stadium in a much closer vote.

Voting is open until 10 p.m. Monday. People can only vote one time, at Ballpark Digest online.
