Cold fish: Show displays the latest in ice fishing accessories

Sportsmen -- and women --who enjoy the outdoors all winter are getting a gander at the latest gadgets, gizmos and goodies at the second annual Arrowhead Ice Fishing and Winter Show this weekend at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.

Sam Cook, the outdoors writer for the Duluth News Tribune, strolled the hall to take note of what's new and found plenty, from electronic fish-skinners to titanium ice-fishing rods to glow-in-the-dark lures.

"Ice fishing...has come a long way since ice anglers sat out in the open on a pail, jigging in the elements," he writes, noting that updated shelters offer greater comfort for ice fishers. "Many are insulated. Elaborate crank-down wheel houses can be pulled onto the ice like a trailer, then cranked down to the ice. Electronic flashers and graphs tell anglers what’s swimming below the ice."

WDIO noted that top name-brand retailers including Clam, Eskimo, and Polaris had their wares on display, as were numerous small independent vendors. The station also made note of the artificial ice fishing tank where visitors could catch live walleye through an 8-inch hole and watch the fish nipping at lures via an underwater camera.

Another exhibit is a life-sized snow globe that can hold up to six people at time and is popular for photographs.

The show continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
