College hockey roundup: Mavericks win WCHA, Huskies fall to Miami Ohio

Minnesota State Mankato earned its second straight WCHA championship title with a 5-2 win over Michigan Tech Saturday in St. Paul. Tournament MVP and freshman forward Brad McClure had a hat trick that sealed the win for the No. 2 Mavericks.

Michigan Tech was the first to score six minutes into the game on a power play. Chase Grant responded with a goal for the Mavs minutes later with the set-up from Brett Stern and Teddy Bluegger, according to the Mavericks Sports website.

Michigan Tech got its second goal early in the second period on another power play. Minnesota State tied the game up in the third period with a Jordan Nelson goal with the assist from Michael Huntebrinker and Stern.

The McClure hat trick finale wowed the crowd, as the Mavericks finished out the night with the Broadmoor trophy in hand.

Goalie Stephon William had 23 saves.

Minnesota State is expected to get the top seed in the NCAA tournament. Brackets are announced Sunday.

St. Cloud State comes up short

St. Cloud State came up short in their quest to win the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Final. University of Miami Ohio took home the title with a 3-2 win.

It was a great ride for the Huskies, who knocked out No. 1 seed University of North Dakota Friday in a major upset to advance to the finals.
