Compost your beer cup: Target Field cuts down on trash
Your beer cup. The tray holding your nachos. That fork and knife, the napkins, straws.
At Target Field, that's all compostable now.
The Twins stadium is partnering with the Colorado-based company Eco-Products to make its concessions even greener, MPR News reports.
The Twins say the "vast majority" of concessions packaging at the stadium is now compostable. (The exceptions are aluminum cans and plastic bottles, which get recycled.) So you can throw almost all of the non-food pieces of your meal right into the compost, right with any leftover food.
The Pioneer Press says the team started introducing the packaging at the start of the season.
How'd they do it?
Well it starts with a Minnesota company, actually.
NatureWorks, which is based in Minnetonka, creates a compostable resin used in the new cups and packaging, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal says.
It's called Ingeo – the company takes a sugar made naturally by plants, then uses fermentation, lactic acid and a few other steps to make a polymer.
That polymer is then used by Eco-Products to create the greener products.
Target Field bills itself as the greenest ballpark in America due in part to its recycling and composting efforts.
The Business Journal says TCF Bank Stadium and Xcel Energy Center also use some Ingeo-made compostable products.
