'Crash with a friend, not on the road,' Super Bowl partygoers warned

Before you crack open your first beer and get comfortable for the Super Bowl, ask yourself: How will I be getting home?

Super Bowl weekend is one of the biggest weekends of the year for drunken-driving arrests, and there will be extra DWI patrols by police across Minnesota this Sunday to catch lawbreakers.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has said there will be heightened police presence in Minnesota's "most dangerous counties."

DWI arrests have spiked by 24 percent on the Big Game weekend over the past 10 years compared to the weekend before, the St. Cloud Times reports, with the average Super Bowl Sunday bringing 190 DWI arrests across the state and one death.

"If you’re not fit to drive, make the right choice after the game and crash at your friend’s house and not on the road," said Donna Berger, Office of Traffic Safety director.

The DPS, which has enlisted the help of Minnesota Vikings running back legend Chuck Foreman for its "Drive Sober" campaign, says DWI arrests declined for the eighth straight year in 2014.

There were 24,159 arrests made last year, compared to 25,719 a year earlier, while drunk-driving deaths fell from 196 to 81 between 2003 and 2013.
