Critical fire weather conditions in parts of central Minnesota

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning until 7 pm today for parts of west-central and south-central Minnesota.

A Red Flag Warning means that elevated fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly, NWS said.

The Minnesota Incident Command System tweeted that the warning "coincides with areas where highs are forecast to reach into the lower 80s today".

Affected areas include those along and west of a line from Little Falls to St. Cloud, Glencoe, and Faribault, the warning says.

The increasing temps, wind gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity as low as 24 percent have created the critical fire weather conditions, NWS reported.

Any fires that develop will probably spread rapidly, so the NWS says outdoor burning is not recommended.

In related news – the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has updated burning restrictions to include three additional counties.

Burning restrictions do not apply to campfires, but the DNR recommends clearing the area around a campfire, keeping an eye on the fire and making sure it is cold to the touch before leaving.
