Dave Christian's 'Miracle on Ice' gold medal is up for auction

Warroad natives Bill and Dave Christian are putting their gold medals up for auction.

Dave Christian, who now resides in the Twin Cities, is best known for his role as a defenseman on the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that bested the heavily favored Soviet Union in the so-called Miracle on Ice game.

His father, Bill Christian, led an underdog 1960 Olympic team to an improbable gold medal victory over Canada and the Soviet Union.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Dave Christian said proceeds from the sale of the two medals will go towards his five grandchildren's college fund.

"Whether or not we have it in our hand, we still both won gold medals," he told the AP, "The memories and all the stories and what not, they won't ever go away. Better to part with it than let the moths eat it."

The Christians also included various other pieces of memorabilia from their collections, including game-worn jerseys, trophies, and used equipment in the auction.

Dave Christian's medal is currently valued at $140,000, while the bid on Bill Christian's medal is set at $14,000.

Heritage Auctions is handling the auction, with a public sale in New York the weekend of Feb. 20-21.
