Dayton declares Tuesday 'Bob McDonald Day' to honor Chisholm coach

Earlier this season, Chisholm head boy's basketball coach Bob McDonald won his 1,000th game, becoming just the 13th coach in the nation's history and first in state history to win more than 1,000 games.

The 2013-14 season is McDonald's 59th and last at the helm of a boy's basketball program, his first six seasons spent at McGregor and Barnum high schools, the rest at Chisholm.

With McDonald and the Bluestreaks of Chisholm taking on Hibbing in a home game tomorrow, Governor Mark Dayton has proclaimed Tuesday "Bob McDonald Day" in Minnesota.

Dayton will not be able to attend the game because of his recent hip surgery, but released a statement congratulating McDonald and naming the day for the 59th-year head coach.

Dayton's statement:

“I deeply regret that my recent hip surgery prevents me from attending Tuesday night’s game and personally presenting this proclamation to Bob McDonald. Bob has more than earned ‘Bob McDonald Day’ in Minnesota, with over 1,000 victories and three state titles in his 59 years of coaching. During these almost six decades, he has coached and developed those boys into men. The entire State of Minnesota honors him for his phenomenal achievements.”

Chisholm has five games remaining in the regular season, and Tuesday marks their last home game before returning to their gym for the last regular season game of the year against Ely Feb. 21.
