The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Friday afternoon that they will open waterfowl production areas to hunters despite the government shutdown for the opening of the state's pheasant hunting season.

The Star Tribune reports that will open about 300,000 acres of pheasant lands to hunters.

In the announcement the service said:

"It has been determined that allowing public access to Waterfowl Production Areas will not incur further government expenditure or obligation and is allowable under a government shutdown. Therefore, effective immediately, all WPAs will reopen to public use."

According to the Pioneer Press, the announcement came just one day after the agency stood firm in its decision to keep the areas closed amid mounting pressure from hunting groups. Thursday the organization said the WPA's and the National Wildlife Refuges would remain closed on Saturday.

Pheasants Forever applauded the announcement which comes on the eve of pheasant hunting in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana.
