Does Maple Grove's comeback top St. Paul Central's?

Two touchdowns in five seconds vs. three touchdowns in 59 seconds

So Maple Grove High School pulled off an improbable comeback on Thursday with three touchdowns in the final minute of play. It could be considered the greatest comeback ever in high school football.

Or is it?

In 2008, St. Paul Central High School faced off against Johnson High School – with the St. Paul conference title on the line. Central hadn't won a conference championship in football since the '80s.

Trailing 18-6 with 12 seconds to go, quarterback LaDarian Horton dropped back, heaved one to Jordan Larson, who pulled down a touchdown with five seconds left.

Central missed the extra point, but recovered an onside kick. Down by six points, the Minutemen still had a breath of life. From the shotgun, Horton dropped back again and launched another a dart to Larson, who pulled down a second touchdown to tie the game.

Again, Central – like Johnson – couldn't make an extra-point to save their lives that night. So things were settled in overtime with Central getting on the board first and then holding off Johnson to pull off the impossible win.

Full disclosure, I'm a St. Paul Central graduate. I was in the stands that night as a sophomore. It remains the most insane thing I've witnessed in sports to this day.

The entire student section at Griffin Stadium stormed the field to celebrate with the team.

Now, I'll tip my cap to Maple Grove because their win came in the state tournament with their season on the line and they're now two wins away from a title. That's something Central has never even sniffed.

However, while I hate to be the this guy, two touchdowns in a five-second span is a hell of a lot crazier than three touchdowns in 59 seconds.

Advantage, Central.
