Duluth native could make his NHL debut this week

Derek Forbort was called up to the NHL by the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday.

The former Duluth East grad and star defenseman at North Dakota was the 15th overall selection in the 2010 NHL Draft. LA Kings Insider notes that he's the final player from the first round of his draft class to get the call to the NHL.

At 6-foot-4, 219 pounds, Forbot gives the Kings another big body on the blue line, and while he hasn't developed into a star like the Kings had hoped, he's developed into a solid professional they can trust.

North Dakota Hockey says Forbort could make his debut Thursday against the Calgary Flames or Saturday when the Kings take on the Washington Capitals.

In 46 games this season with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, Forbot has tallied 2 goals and 9 assists while logging a plus-15 rating.

He'll become the first player in Kings history to wear number 84.
