It's now very clear why Fox 21 sports anchor Sam Ali wasn't an art major in college (we assume), but that doesn't mean he's incapable of drawing pictures that the public can't get enough of.
The Duluth TV guy had to do his sports update during the 10 p.m. newscast Thursday while the Minnesota-Duluth men's hockey team was still in action against Massachusetts in the Frozen Four, which meant he had to talk about the game without showing video highlights.
"Due to NCAA regulations, we are not allowed to show footage of the game because it's still going on right now," said Ali, seconds before he went viral (we assume he will go viral). "However, what we can show is an artistic interpretation of the action so far."
Ali used Microsoft Paint (we assume) pictures in place of a highlight reel, sketching players who all look like the fat guy in Nintendo's 1988 classic Ice Hockey – and he identified each player with their number. He even drew some semblance of a net (though it might be a colorless rainbow, it's hard to tell).
Perhaps the best part of the artistic interpretation are the smiles and frown faces on the players and goalies.
Unfortunately, UMD lost to Massachusetts 3-2 in overtime, ending UMD's bid for a third straight national title.
UMass will play St. Cloud State in the national championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
