Eagan's Zach Zenner turning heads in the NFL

Zach Zenner is the only player in Division 1 college football history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. He accomplished the feat at South Dakota State University, and now he's turning heads in the NFL.

Zenner, a 2009 graduate from Eagan High School in Minnesota, signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent and has ever since been giving the Lions good reason to keep him on the team.

Thursday night was the latest example: Per, Zenner had four carries for 22 yards and had five receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown in Detroit's preseason loss to the Washington Redskins. Pro Football Talk notes that Zenner also had a 45-yard run called back because of a holding penalty.

“You can tell he’s got something,” Lions coach Jim Caldwell said, according to The Detroit News. ‘He’s got a very unusual kind of a running style. He’s got power, and he can make you miss. He can catch the ball. He’s a good pass protector and he keeps getting better all the time.”

Zenner rushed for 55 yards on 13 carries in his first preseason game.

The Detroit News says Zenner will probably make the Lions' final 53-man roster if he continues to play the way he has.

Zenner was a Minnesota Mr. Football finalist in 2009, as well as an outstanding baseball player who helped Eagan reach the state tournament.
