East Coast bias strikes again, saying no city needs a championship more than Philly

Philly got a championship from Villanova in 2016 and the Phillies in 2008.

FiveThirtyEight has gone and done it. The analytics website has, to say the least, irked Minnesota sports fans who really know what it's like to suffer through heartbreak and an overall miserable existence.

Allow me to give you the headline FiveThirtyEight used in its pity party story about Philadelphia sports: "No City Needs A Championship As Badly As Philadelphia"

Let's be honest. If not for the three-time WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx and the Gophers women's hockey teams of recent years, Minnesota is Loserville, USA. Philly doesn't have anything to whine about, and FiveThirtyEight's story is no excuse for how Philly fans treated Viking fans a couple of weeks ago.

– We asked Vikings fans for their positive experiences with Eagles fans.

Minnesotans, we have reason to sulk and throw beer cans at people (not really, that's just wrong).

The Vikings took a 7-0 lead on Philly in the NFC title game and then got 38-donut'd as hard as the Giants 41-donut'd them in 2001. Favre in 2009, the loss to the Falcons in 1998. Four Super Bowl losses nearing 50 years ago. It's nothing but purple pain.

Philly doesn't have anything to complain about.

The Eagles lost the 2008 NFC Championship, but four years earlier they were at least in the damn Super Bowl. Oh, and don't forget that they went to the conference championship every year from 2001-04. It must've been hard to watch your team be really good every season.

The Vikings get close about once every decade, but they haven't busted through to the big game in 40 years.

That's just the football part of the Philly vs. Minny equation.

How about the Wild and Flyers, Twins and Phillies, University of Minnesota and Villanova, and Timberwolves and 76ers?

Here's a quick update.

  • Wild: never reached the Stanley Cup
  • Flyers: played in the 2010 Stanley Cup
  • Twins: horrible for 5 straight years, snuck into the playoffs last year
  • Phillies: Won the World Series in 2008
  • Gophers: about that...
  • Villanova: men's basketball team won the 2016 National Championship
  • Wolves: finally enjoying a good season for the first time since 2004
  • 76ers: 5 trips to the NBA Finals, most recently in 2001

So, SportsCenter, it hasn't been "a minute" for Philly.
