Eden Prairie's Nick Leddy agrees to big contract with Islanders

Seven years, $38.5 million.

That's the new contract extension former Eden Prairie High School standout Nick Leddy signed with the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

"We have something special in this locker room and I'm excited to be a part of it for seven more years," Leddy said in a statement. "From the start of my time here, the Islanders have been a first-class organization. I'm honored by their commitment to me and look forward to challenging for the Stanley Cup for years to come."

Newsday reports Leddy will receive an average annual salary of $5.5 million.

The 23-year-old leads all Islanders defenseman with 8 goals and ranks second in points with 25.

The Minnesota Wild selected Leddy 16th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, but before he suited up with his hometown team he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks along with Kim Johnsson for Cam Barker.

Leddy was Minnesota's Mr. Hockey winner in 2009 before playing one season at the University of Minnesota in 2009-10, earning the team’s Rookie of the Year award.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2013.
