ESPN, TNT come together to give Craig Sager, fighting cancer, an NBA Finals chance

Craig Sager has been reporting from NBA sidelines with Turner Sports for 34 years. Despite being one of the most beloved reporters in the business, he's never worked an NBA Finals game.

That all changes Thursday.

ESPN invited Sager to join Doris Burke as a courtside reporter for Game 6 of the Finals between the Cavaliers and Warriors.

Making this story even more noteworthy is that Sager has been battling acute myeloid leukemia since 2014 and in March he told HBO Sports that doctors gave him 3-6 months to live. But that was for a person not receiving care; Sager is getting the best care. But he's still fighting for his life.

"I’d like to thank Turner and ESPN for approaching me with this tremendous opportunity to be part of The Finals broadcast team," Sager said in a statement. "I’ve been watching the series very closely and, while I do not want to distract in any way from the event itself, I look forward to being in the building for what will be an incredibly exciting Game 6. The NBA community is a very special one and this is a great honor."

"Whenever Craig Sager is covering your game, you know it’s a big one," LeBron James told SI Now in late April. "But when I look over and see him covering our game right now. . . . Talking about it makes me sentimental."

Sager's best tie to Minnesota is with Kevin Garnett, who made it a habit of telling Sager to burn his flashy suits.

"You take this and you burn it," Garnett famously told Sager in 2009. "So when you get done with this, you should be butt-ass naked."
