Everyday Eddie! Guardado likely to join Twins' coaching staff

A fan-favorite from the early 2000s Minnesota Twins teams appears close to returning to Minnesota.

The Pioneer Press, Star Tribune and MLB.com say closer Eddie Guardado – who earned the nickname "Everyday Eddie" for his performance during his 11-plus season with the Twins – will be joining new manager Paul Molitor's staff as the bullpen coach.

Guardado, now 44 years old, was an All-Star selection for the Twins in 2002 and 2003, racking up 86 saves during those two years with an ERA under 3.00. Minnesota won 94 that first year and 90 the second, and made the playoffs by taking the AL Central crown – the first time the Twins had won the division since 1991.

Guardado left for Seattle before the 2004 season, but returned to the Twins in 2008, appearing in nine games. He was inducted into the Twins Hall of Fame in 2013.

He's never been a major league coach, MLB.com notes, but "has been lauded for his ability to connect with pitchers" while working with the Twins as an instructor basis during spring training recently.

As of Thursday morning, the Twins have not publicly announced the hire. The Pioneer Press says Guardado would replace Bobby Cuellar, who was not brought back after spending the past two years in the position.

And for fun, here's an old Everyday Eddie commercial the Twins ran.
