Ex-Twin Justin Morneau slow to return from latest concussion

Scary news in Major League Baseball as former Minnesota Twins MVP first baseman Justin Morneau's most recent concussion will keep him sidelined longer than expected.

Morneau suffered a concussion and a cervical neck sprain, ESPN reports, while diving for a ground ball to first base on May 13. He was put on the 7-day concussion list but won't be ready to return when he's eligible, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.

"It's probably not just [seven days]," Weiss said Thursday. "I'm not going to say it's going to be a whole lot longer than that, but he's not going to be in the lineup in two days."

Morneau was the 2006 American League MVP and was off to an MVP-like start in 2010 before he suffered a concussion while sliding into second base in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Morneau has had multiple concussions and it stopped his outstanding Twins' career in its tracks.

Last season, his first with the Rockies, he won the National League batting title with a .319 average. He is hitting .290 with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs in 27 games this season.

Here's what Morneau had to say in 2011 about returning from concussions, according to Sports Illustrated.

"The one thing you don't want to do is put someone in position the day after or two days later all of a sudden by saying, 'Are you feeling OK?' " Morneau said. "The worst thing you can do with a concussion is rush back to play. You're diagnosed and you have a week and if it clears up like most people hope it does and they usually do, with most people it's short-term, that's the best-case scenario."
