Favre to coach in high school championship game

It was 1997 when Brett Favre led the Packers over the Patriots for the only Super Bowl title of his illustrious NFL career. Now, 16 years later, Favre is back in a championship game – this time as a coach.

Favre is the offensive coordinator at Oak Grove High School near his home in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and the Class 6A school will play for a state championship Friday night in Jackson, Mississippi. USA Today has the full story.

Favre's offense was on display in the Southern Mississippi title game last week when they routed Meridian High School, 45-14. To no surprise, the star of Favre's offense was the quarterback, who threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another.

Kirk McCarty, the left-handed quarterback, says Favre is just another coach on the team.

"As strange as this may sound, he's just become one of the coaches," McCarty said. "He doesn't want special treatment and he doesn't get any. He's held to the same standard as everyone else."

It won't be a surprise to anyone who followed Favre in the NFL, but the former three-time NFL MVP isn't sure if he'll return to coach against next year.

"Who knows if I'll do it next year," Favre said, via the Star Tribune. "I really don't know. It's been a lot of fun. I enjoy it, it's easy and it's not too time-consuming."

Favre, an avid outdoorsman, joked that the only drawback of playing for a title is that he can't take full advantage of Mississippi's deer hunting season.

"It's cutting into my time in the woods," Favre said. "But I'm not going to complain too much about that."

Meanwhile, Favre spent a few minutes before Monday's Seahawks-Saints game sharing a secret the Vikings used in the 2009-10 NFC Championship against New Orleans to help reduce the noise in the Superdome.

"Favre shared with Payton that the Vikings had designer noise reduction ear plugs custom made for that game and Favre said it really helped," Lisa Salters of ESPN reported, via Yahoo! Sports. "So, Payton ordered up 20 of those ear plugs."

The Saints were rocked by the Seahawks, 34-7.
