FootGolf season is back in Minnesota, with new courses set to open Friday

The FootGolf craze swept Minnesota last year and is only going to get bigger this summer as several more courses open across the state – starting Friday.

Afton Alps, in Hastings, said it will unveil its new, 18-hole FootGolf Course at noon, welcoming competitors to try their luck on a course taking up the front nine of Afton's 18-hole golf course in the St. Croix River Valley.

The game, a cross between soccer and golf that sees people "kick off" from a tee box and attempt to get a soccer ball into a 21-inch diameter cup, is increasingly being seen as a way for golf courses to attract younger families at a time when participation in the traditional sport has been on the decline in Minnesota.

Afton Alps will charge people $12 for a round on weekdays and $15 on Saturday and Sunday, with players able to rent a ball for $3 or bring their own from home.

It is one of several new FootGolf courses set to open this spring, with FootGolf Minnesota noting the others are Northern Hills in Rochester, Pebble Creek in Becker, Minnesota National GC in McGregor, Oak Glen in Stillwater and Prairie View in Worthington.

Also opening this weekend is a new course at the City of Chaska golf course, which the Chaska Herald reports will have its grand opening on Saturday between noon and 6 p.m.

It will bring the total number of FootGolf courses in Minnesota to 19, with the Pioneer Press noting the number stood at 11 by the end of last summer.

Gem Lake Hills general manager Tony Carlson told the newspaper last year that FootGolf courses had attracted a mixture of soccer teams, birthday parties and even some bachelor parties.
