Fore? Try 482: Golfer driven to play every Minnesota course

He says it was once a dumb idea. But now it's an obsession.

Art Hennington wants to play golf at every course in Minnesota. That's 482 courses, he says. (If you visit Golf, its Minnesota page reads: "Minnesota has 575 golf courses to choose from." But Art says some of them have closed, others listed are actually in Iowa or North Dakota, and some courses with more than 18 holes count themselves as more than one course.)

The 65-year-old retired teacher from Elk River is checking off some Red River Valley courses this week. Valley News Live reports Hawley, Lake Park, and Detroit Lakes are on his list for Tuesday. But while in Moorhead on Monday, Hennington paused long enough to chat about his unusual quest, which he says is a great way to see Minnesota.

"We've been in every corner of the state and it's amazing all the little towns and boroughs that there are out there," Hennington told the station.

Valley News does not provide a current tally for Art's progress. But when his hometown paper -- the Elk River Star News -- reported on his crusade four years ago, he'd already hit more than 300 courses and was knocking them down at the rate of 40 a year.

Which makes 482 sound very doable.
