David Plummer, a former University of Minnesota swimmer who now coaches the boys team at Wayzata High School, won a bronze medal in the 100 meter backstroke at the Rio Olympics Monday night.

As NBC reports, Plummer became the oldest person to medal in the event at 30 years and 304 days of age. He finished the race in 52.40 seconds, while fellow American Ryan Murphy won the gold medal with an Olympic-record time of 51.97 seconds.

Plummer is a native of Oklahoma City who came to Minnesota to attend the U in 2005. He was a 14-time All-American with the Gophers in events including the medley relay, his Swim Swam bio says. He will compete in the 4x100 medley relay at Rio beginning Friday.

Plummer is making his first appearance in the Olympics.

A group of the Wayzata swimmers he coaches made the trip to Omaha earlier this summer where Plummer qualified for the trip to Rio, the Pioneer Press reports.

With Murphy's gold medal, the U.S. continues of streak of having won the 100m men's backstroke at every Olympics dating back to 1996. And Americans have won some sort of hardware in the race going back to the Herbert Hoover administration.
