Former Gopher Sam Warning among latest Wild roster cuts

The Minnesota Wild trimmed their roster to 44 players Thursday – and one of those they let go will be a familiar name for many Minnesota hockey fans.

The Wild released former Gophers forward Sam Warning from his amateur tryout contract. They also sent six players to Iowa and one to juniors.

Forwards Raphael Bussieres and Tanner Eberle were sent to Iowa along with defensemen Guillaume Gelinas and Alex Gudbranson. Goaltenders Brody Hoffman and Stephen Michalek were sent to Iowa as well.

Center Pavel Jenys was sent back to the Ontario Hockey League. Jenys, who is 19, was eligible for the AHL because he was drafted out of Europe.

Assistant Wild GM Brent Flahr told the Star Tribune's Michael Russo the Wild felt Jenys would develop better in juniors being a "bigger fish in a small pond."

One player making a name for himself in camp so far has been invitee Matt Carey, who spent all of last season playing for Rochester in the AHL.

Carey played two games for the Blackhawks at the end of the 2013-14 season, but last year bounced around Rockford's lineup playing on all four lines.

"He's a guy who's played mainly on the fourth line and he had 10 goals," said Iowa Wild head coach John Torchetti. "That means that he has a good chance of having a better ole on our team maybe, a third line role or higher, if he keeps going the right direction."

As for Cary, he seems to be enjoying Wild coach Mike Yeo's style of play.

"He wants defense first, and then offense comes second," Carey said. "I can play in the offensive zone but not everyone can play in the defensive zone. That's something I need to learn and shape my game around before I start scoring goals."
