Former Gophers tight end Maxx Williams won't attend NFL Draft

Former Gophers tight end Maxx Williams is regarded as one of the top tight ends in this year's NFL Draft, but he won't be in Chicago when his name is called.

Williams told KARE 11 that instead, he plans to be with his family during the NFL Draft weekend April 30-May 2.

Williams is regarded by many to be a late first or early second-round draft pick. He led the Gophers last season with 36 catches for 569 yards and eight touchdowns on an offense that didn't throw the football very much.

Pro Football Talk notes that Williams joins a growing group of this year's class choosing to stay home instead of attending the draft events.

Both of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft – Florida State's Jameis Winston and Oregon's Marcus Mariota – have said they plan to skip the festivities in Chicago.

Two of the three analysts on the NFL Network project Williams as the best tight end in this year's draft, comparing him to Todd Heap and Desmond Clark.

In two years at Minnesota, Williams amassed 936 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns.
