A former standout Minnesota State University, Mankato football player was charged with attempted murder Wednesday, after police say he shot a longtime friend in the neck and face near the Renaissance Festival fairgrounds.

Dennis Carter, 25, was charged in Scott County with multiple crimes including second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. As of Wednesday afternoon he was being held in the county jail on $750,000 bail.

According to the Mankato Free Press, the criminal complaint says Diaa Ahmed Abdelhakim told police he and Carter were planning to smoke marijuana before heading to a casino on Aug. 20, the night of the shooting.

Abdelhakim said Carter pulled over to a dirt road off Highway 41 near the Renaissance Festival fairgrounds in Shakopee around 10:30 p.m. He said they both got out of the car and Carter then shot him, the paper reports.

KARE 11 reports authorities say Abdelhakim was found with a gunshot wound to the neck, and despite damage to his neck, cheek, jaw, teeth, esophagus and trachea, was able to communicate to police it was Carter who pulled the trigger. Carter was arrested later that night near Jordan, Minnesota.

Carter and Abdelhakim each admitted to police they had been involved in the purchase and sale of marijuana together, the Free Press reports.

According to FOX 9, police say Carter claimed Abdelhakim pulled the gun on him while on the side of the road, and during a struggle for the gun a shot went off and hit Abdelhakim.

Carter played wide receiver for the Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks for three years from 2010-2013, compiling a team-high 964 receiving yards with nine touchdowns during his senior season.
