Former North Star Mike Modano retires

Former North Star Mike Modano is calling it a career. Modano played at Met Center in Bloomington for four full seasons before the Stars left for Dallas. Former North Star Mike Modano is calling it a career. Modano played at Met Center in Bloomington for four full seasons before the Stars left for Dallas. In his 21-year career, he scored 561 goals, played in eight All-Star Games and won a Stanley Cup.

Modano announced his decision on his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Modano was considered one of the "old school" players in the NHL, but he definitely wasn't old enough for new age social media.

Modano broke into the league in 1989 as a 19-year old rookie with the North Stars. He was destined for stardom from the start. He scored 29-goals during that first season, many of which were of the highlight variety.

Despite calling it a career on Wednesday, Modano did have an opportunity to play with the Vancouver Canucks. He decided against it because he hadn't unzipped his hockey bag since playing in his final game last season.

Although Modano's career has ended, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, American-born player of all-time. And it all started when the North Stars drafted him first overall in the 1988 NHL Draft.
