It's been 23 years since he passed away, but Fred Shero was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday.

Shero, who made a name for himself with the St. Paul Saints, went on to coach the Philadelphia Flyers to the team's only Stanly Cup championships in 1974 and 1975.

Shero guided the Saints to International Hockey League championships in the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons.

Shero's son, Ray, is the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and he spoke highly of his father in an email to the Star Tribune.

"Great honor for my dad and our family. He was always about his players, so I know he would want to thank them for making this happen. Also to Mr. Snider and Mr. Allen for giving him his chance in the nhl back in 1971."

Shero will be inducted November 11 in Toronto.

In a related story by the Pioneer Press, Ray Shero was new Wild winger Matt Cooke's GM in Pittsburgh. Fully aware of Cooke's track record in the NHL, he believes Cooke is a good person.

“Believe me, Matt Cooke is a really good person and I believe you’ll see that,” Shero said. “Cooke always knows he’s one hit away.”
