Free-agent pool doesn't have top WR Vikings need

The consensus opinion around the league is that the Vikings have three position needs as NFL free agency begins and the draft approaches: Wide receiver, offensive line and strong safety.

Where the Vikings fill needs to to be determined, but after releasing veteran Mike Wallace on Tuesday it's clear that upgrading the weapons for Teddy Bridgewater to throw to is a must – even former Vikings Pete Bercich and Robert Smith agree, although Smith thinks drafting Baylor receiver Josh Doctson is the best answer.

The wide receivers available on the free-agent market aren't household names. The best of the best, according to Pro Football Focus, include:

  • Marvin Jones
  • Rishard Matthews
  • Travis Benjamin
  • Jermaine Kearse
  • James Jones
  • Rueben Randle
  • Nate Washington
  • Andre Johnson

But Jones, the top receiver available per PFF, is closing in on a deal with the Lions, according to reports.

Clearly, the Vikings probably aren't going to find a No.1 receiver in free agency. At this point, their No. 1 receiver is probably Stefon Diggs, with Jarius Wright, Charles Johnson, Adam Thielen and Cordarrelle Patterson behind him.

Stay tuned for updates on what could be a wild day in the NFL.
