Fuld homers, Hughes shuts down Mariners as Twins win

Phil Hughes pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings and the Minnesota Twins beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Tuesday night in Seattle.

Hughes was outstanding, he struck out eight and didn't walk a single Mariners hitter to pick up his ninth victory of the season.

It was a nice bounce back start for Hughes, who had struggled in his last few outings.

The strong start at Safeco Field shouldn't have been a surprise. Even when Hughes has struggled in recent years, he has had success in Seattle.

He didn't have a lot of help offensively, from Minnesota. Sam Fuld hit his second home run of the season to give the Twins a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Fuld had a big night, he was 3-for-3 with the home run and a pair of singles. He also stole two bases.

Leading by a run in the eighth, Brian Dozier gave the Twins a little bit of breathing room. He hit a sacrifice fly to score Eduardo Escobar and push the Twins lead to 2-0.

It had already been a good day for Dozier. Before the game, he was selected to participate in the 2014 MLB Home Run Derby at Target Field on Monday.

Casey Fien came on to get the Twins out of a pinch in the eighth inning, that set up Glen Perkins for his 21st save, of the season.
