All-Star video: Adrian Peterson whiffs in celebrity softball; US Future Stars win

Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson is better off sticking with football. He didn't do so well at the plate in the All-Star celebrity softball game Sunday evening.

In his defense, Peterson hasn't swung a bat in 15 years, and he was facing two-time Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch. Peterson, though, challenged Finch to throw fastballs instead of slow-pitch to him, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press -- and that's what she did.

Finch blew the first pitch past Peterson, and he fouled off two more hard pitches before grounding out to third base.

Here's video of that at-bat:

Peterson finished 0 for 2 with a pair of groundouts, and mishandled a routine fly ball to center field.

He played for the American League squad, coached by Jack Morris, which lost to the National League team coached by John Smoltz.

Earlier in the afternoon, some of Major League Baseball's top prospects played in the Futures game, and provided some of their own entertainment.

Texas Rangers prospect Joey Gallo showed off his power with a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the U.S. team the lead in a 3-2 victory over the World squad Sunday at the All-Star Futures Game for baseball’s best minor leaguers, the Associated Press reports.

The distance of Gallo’s drive to right field was estimated at 419 feet. The third baseman for Double-A Frisco hit several other balls farther than that during batting practice before the game at Target Field.

Gallo's homer came a half inning after a two-run shot in the top of the sixth by Javier Baez for the World team.

Minnesota fans were keeping an eye on several Twins prospects who played in the game.

Twins’ Class AA first baseman Kenny Vargas went 1-for-4 for the World team. He hit a double deep into right field in the fourth inning, and struck out twice. Teammate Jose Berrios, the starting pitcher for the World team, retired all three hitters he faced.

Another Twins’ pitcher, Class AAA righthander Alex Meyer, gave up one hit and no runs in the fourth inning on just four pitches. All of them were strikes at 97 mph, according to the Star Tribune. The first batter flied out, the second singled, and the third hit into a double play to end the inning.

Meyer, whom the Twins acquired from the Nationals in a trade for center fielder Denard Span, has 103 strikeouts in 89-plus innings for AAA Rochester.

The U.S team, which has won five straight Futures Games, raised its record to 10-6 since the exhibition was started in 1999.

The U.S. team was supervised by former Twins manager Tom Kelly, who is a special instructor for the team. Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven, who played for Kelly on the 1987 World Series-winning club, managed the World team.

Blyleven, who is of Dutch heritage, presented the lineups before the game while wearing a pair of yellow wooden shoes.

Meantime, Kelly had to borrow a pair of baseball pants from current Twins manager Ron Gardenhire for the game, according to the AP. When Kelly arrived at Target Field Sunday, he had a jersey waiting for him, but no pants. So he had to use a pair of Gardenhire's.

“They’re a little loose,” Kelly joked of Gardenhire's pants. “No, they’re not. They fit fine.”

Kelly apparently also helped himself to a cigar from Gardenhire’s office.
