Rains rushes Eden Prairie to 6A Championship

Eden Prairie (13-0) completed the perfect season with a 28-27 victory over Totino Grace in the 6A championship game at the 2014 Prep Bowl.

Will Rains broke off second half touchdown runs of 57 and 75 yards to highlight the Eagle come-from-behind victory. Rains finished with 230 yards rushing on 26 carries.

One interesting note from the game, Eden Prairie was just 2-of-9 on third down, but they were 5-of-5 on fourth down.

Trailing 28-21, late in the fourth quarter, Totino-Grace had one last chance as Lance Benick broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run to cut the Eden Prairie lead to one.

But they decided to go for the two-point conversion and the lead. Lance Benick's pass fell incomplete at the goal line and Eden Prairie held on.

Grand Meadow shuts out Edgerton/Ellsworth in 9-man championship

The top-ranked Grand Meadow Superlarks were the first state champions crowned in the 2014 Prep Bowl. They beat Edgerton/Ellsworth 48-0 to win the 9-man Championship, and complete a perfect 14-0 season.

The Superlarks took advantage of five Flying Dutchmen turnovers, including four interceptions and held them to 181 yards of total offense.

Grand Meadow running back Landon Jacobson ran 34 times for 143 yards and three touchdowns. While Superlark quarterback Michael Stejskal added three touchdown passes and 215 yards yards through the air.

Interestingly enough, Edgerton/Ellsworth are the only team in Minnesota that prepared for their Prep Bowl game in a horse barn.

Holdingford claims 2A championship in double overtime

The Holdingford Huskers got the stop they needed to turn BOLD away on what would have been a game-tying 2-point conversion to hold on to a 20-18 victory in double overtime of the Class 2A Prep Bowl.

It was the first double overtime Prep Bowl game since Cook County defeated Adrian in 1998.

The game was dominated by defense as neither team scored until the fourth quarter. Brad Wolff's four-yard touchdown run with 3:04 to play gave the Warriors a 6-0 lead.

Then on the last play from scrimmage Holdingford quarterback Austin Gerads broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run to tie the game at six.

After Wolff scored to put BOLD up 12-6 in the first overtime, Holdingford running back Nathan Brinker pulled the Huskers even.

In double overtime, the Huskers got tricky as Brinker found Gerads on a halfback pass in the end zone. The Huskers added the two point conversion and led 20-12.

Ben Steffel then scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to get the Warriors within two points at 20-18. But the two point conversion attempt failed and the Huskers held on for the win.

Becker quiets Islanders for Class 4A Crown

The Becker Bulldogs won the Class 4A state championship by defeating DeLaSalle 24-6, Friday evening.

The Bulldogs' defense forced six turnovers, including five interceptions in the game. That quieted a DeLaSalle offense that scored 61, 70, 55 and 35 points in their first four playoff games.

Cj Schwintek led the Bulldogs on the ground, he ran for 146 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries. Quarterback Michael Veldman completed 10-of-16 passes for 163 yards and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Matt Conzemius.

Eric Blomgren was Veldman's favorite target, he finished with five catches for 82 yards.

It was Becker's second state football championship, the first one since 1999.
