Girls' basketball tournament: Hopkins, DeLaSalle, Maranatha Christian Academy defend titles; Providence Academy also wins

Hopkins defended its title against Osseo in the the Class AAAA championship game. In Class AAA, DeLaSalle powered past Richfield for its second state title. Maranatha Christian Academy won its second straight Class A title and Providence Academy took the Class AA championship at the State Girls' Basketball Tournament.

Hopkins defended its Class AAAA title by beating Osseo 77-55 Saturday night at the Target Center. It's the Royals' fourth state title since 2004.

Third-seeded DeLaSalle defeated top-seeded Richfield with a 65-45 victory in the Class AAA state championship game. Islanders junior guard Allina Starr had a game-high 24 points.

Providence Academy scored a 46-40 victory over Sauk Centre in the Class AA state championships. Forward AnnMarie Healy led Providence Academy with 18 points; forward Macy Weller led Sauk Centre with 14 points.

Maranatha Christian Academy took down Mountain Iron-Buhl 49-37 to repeat as Class A state champs. Mountain Iron-Buhl had been seeking to become the first Iron Range school to win a title since Chisholm in 1984.

In the 3A championship game, DeLaSalle hit a last-second two-pointer to squeak by Minneapolis Washburn 57-56. The 4A championship was also a buzzer-beater finish -- Osseo held on to beat Lakeville North 49-47.

For the sixth straight year the girls lacrosse state championship game was settled between Blake and Eden Prairie. And for a third straight year it was Blake winning the title. The lady Bears defeated the Eagles, 11-10 Thursday afternoon.

It was championship Saturday at the Girls' state hockey tournament in St. Paul. Breck beat South St. Paul 3-2 to claim the 1A state girls hockey tournament championship game Saturday afternoon. In class AA the Roseville Raiders will play defending champion Minnetonka Saturday night.

The 2012 State Girls' Volleyball Tournament is complete. The top-seeded Lakeville North Panthers won the Class 3A title Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul after defeating Eden Prairie Eagles with a 25-21, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18 victory. It was a rematch of last year's championship match.
