Glen Perkins nowhere near returning after injury setback

Twins closer Glen Perkins is feeling better than he was six weeks ago, but he's still nowhere near returning to the closer role thanks to a setback in his rehab.

Perkins spoke with reporters on Sunday and said that he's feeling a stabbing pain in the front of his left shoulder when he throws.

"When I go to throw, I don’t want to say it feels like a knife-stabbing pain but it’s a pain in the front of my shoulder," Perkins said Sunday, via the Pioneer Press. "When I let the ball go, to me it feels like the joint opens up and then I throw and it slams shut. It’s not comfortable. It just doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel even close to right, to be honest with you."

According to Star Tribune columnist Jim Souhan, there is an unidentified "key figure" with the team who wonders if Perkins will pitch again this season.

The pain he's feeling now is different than the pain in the back of his shoulder that originally landed him on the disabled list six weeks ago.

Going forward, Perkins will take a week off and then try throwing again. If the pain persists he'll be reevaluated by a doctor.

Kevin Jepsen has as many blown saves (3) as he has saves (3) and he's posted a 4.66 ERA as the replacement closer.
