Golf in December? Courses open up thanks to warm weather

Since there's no snow and temperatures are lingering in the 40s this week, some golf courses have decided to take advantage of their unseasonably clear greens by reopening.

Oak Marsh, located in Oakdale, had closed in November. But on Tuesday Assistant Golf Pro Michael Schmitz told BringMeTheNews people could not wait to pull out their clubs and get back on the course. They scheduled 70 people Tuesday. On Wednesday, they're completely booked with 120 people, Schmitz says.

This isn't the first time for the course. Schmitz says last year they opened Dec. 26. He says no snow and temperatures above 40 degrees make for perfect winter golfing weather. The course says it plans to stay open until Friday, possibly longer if weather permits.

Pioneer Creek Golf Course in Maple Plain posted on Facebook it also opened Tuesday.

Oak Summit Golf Course in Rochester opened Monday, according to KTTC. The station says about 20 people donned their hats and scarves to hit the course.

According to Minnesota's Golf Guide, the state has more than 500 golf courses that take up about 67,500 acres of land. And WCCO says Minnesota has the most golfers per capita in the country, while noting the sport generates around $2.4 billion for the state every year.
