Gopher hockey swept in the Mile High City

Denver handed the Gophers a 4-3 loss in overtime to sweep the weekend series Saturday night. Minnesota (15-7-0 WCHA) had to play without Kyle Rau, who was suspended for a game following a hit Friday night. The Gophers return to home ice against Bemidji State on Friday.

Gopher hockey team controls its destiny

The Gopher Hockey team sits at the top of the WCHA as it heads west to Denver this weekend. Sweeping the Pioneers would strengthen the Gophers position and essentially eliminate Denver from playoff contention. The Strib's Roman Augustovitz says it will happen.

Hockey Gophers enter tournament without Bjugstad, Rau

The hockey Gophers are back on the ice Friday night in the Mariucci Classic. After a 20-day layoff, they play Niagra to open the weekend tournament -- which also features Northeastern and Princeton. The Gophers will skate without stars Nick Bjugstad and Kyle Rau, who are playing for Team USA in the World Junior Championships.

WCHA suspends Gophers' Kyle Rau

Rau is required to serve his one-game suspension Saturday night during the series finale at the University of Denver. He was given a five-minute major penalty for boarding and a ten-minute game misconduct after a high check to Denver's Jason Zucker Friday night.

Gophers fall to Denver, 5-3

In the WCHA last night the Gophers lost in Denver by a score of 5-to-3. Kyle Rau, Nate Condon and Zach Budish scored for Minnesota. Minnesota Wild prospect Jason Zucker scored for Denver, and he also drew a game misconduct penalty on Rau.

Gopher Hockey should trump Colorado

This weekend is kind of an odd week in the WCHA, with several teams not playing. The good news for the Gophers is that they are up against a weaker Colorado College. The Strib's Roman Augustoviz says the Gophers should end the weekend with at least 3 points.

With a weekend sweep of the Fighting Sioux, the Gophers hockey team (6-0, 9-1) is now No. 1 in the USA Today and the U.S. College Hockey Online polls.

Gophers hockey relying on youth

There are 27 players on the Gophers' hockey team. 18 of them are either sophomore's or true freshman. Despite the youth, head coach Don Lucia is hoping his upperclassmen will lead the team on and off the ice. He'll also be expecting many of his talented youngsters to score goals.
